Wow, Mtr really is dead.
That's because almost all of the regular posters moved to aaroads.com.
I've browsed through the forums there, but I find that the lack of
message threading makes it difficult to follow the sub-threads in many
of the long running topics.

I still think that setting up appropriate filters in one's news client
is sufficient to easily carry on discussions here without interference
from spammers or trolls.

AA Roads has been down for three days now. In "maintenance mode" because the
upgrade to the forum software doesn't play nice with the version of PHP that
they run on their server.

There were too many trolls and a few supertrolls, and too many off topic political arguments. Horrible signal-to-noise ratio. That is why I left m.t.r in 2010.

I'm thinking of abandoning it altogether myself, and just clicking on the box next to the MTR email and hitting "delete."

I don't recall it being that bad (at least before 2010), but what did it
in for me is the lack of any content at all in this newsgroup (since
fewer and fewer regulars were posting at all). The same thing happened
to rec.autos.driving. I thought it was due to my filters at first, but
when viewing those groups through the Google groups interface, I didn't
see anything other than spam and cross-posted troll posts. In my
newsreader, nothing new was showing up since those posts were filtered.

These days, I just read and post to reddit.com in various subreddits.
While it does have threaded discussions, it tends to discourage long
running threads by moving them down in the list (unlike my newsreader).

All of usenet is dying. In large part it's because so many ISPs have quit
carrying newsfeeds out of fear of prosecution for child porn in binary groups.

That is true, though a lot of newsgroups in the comp hierarchy are still
pretty active. At least you can still access usenet through Google
groups or by using one of the free usenet providers like
eternal-september.org.

Having the string "google" in your Message ID will get your item routed
to the bit-bucket in some froups.

I use News.Individual.NET (10€/year no --or very little-- spam).
