Has anybody seen a map of the proposed extension of the Muskogee Turnpike
towards Poteau? Will it follow BY-PASS US 59 around Poteau?

The combined length of the projects adds about 50 miles to the existing
563-mile turnpike system. The improvements seek to address the increased
traffic demands in the rapidly developing urbanized corridor, and to protect
the rural corridor right-of-way for future extension of the Muskogee
Turnpike
when traffic demand justify expansion. Extension projects to existing
segments include the John Kilpatrick extension west to Interstate 40,
Creek's
east and west extensions to connect to the Turner and Will Rogers turnpikes,
H. E. Bailey Spur, and right-of-way acquisition for Muskogee segment future
expansion. The authority has a proven track record of managing large
simultaneous construction projects. Upon completion of the 1998 projects,
the
Oklahoma Turnpike will be the nation's largest turnpike system with 612
miles.

Weird this came up. I took a daytrip to Eastern Oklahoma to get 5 counties,
and I passed through Poteau. It had a couple of nice diamond interchanges.

Should have hollered at me, I could have shown you around. I live about an
hour from Poteau. There are lots of neat road-related things around Poteau.

It 's a dead issue now that US59 is being four laned south from Sallisaw.
That, some environmental issues with wetlands and the fact the pike would
have been a bigger money loser than the Chickasaw doomed the extension.

You will note from a previous post of mine that OK has many pike
authorizations still on the books. Very few of the ones not yet built will
ever get off the ground. The Poteau extension was part of a package deal
from the early 90's that included pikes in southern and western OK. Due tot
he downfall in the "awl bidness" at that time, the state decided (or had the
decision handed to them by the markets) that they could not afford such an
ambitious project.

Anyone for GARVEE?
